RegionsThe Douro Region

The Douro river basin is the birthplace of great Iberian wines. The Douro River rises in Spain, in the Urbión mountain range, at more than 2000 meters of altitude. In Spain, its course winds through the wine regions of Ribera del Duero, Rueda and Toro.

On the border with Portugal, in the heart of the Douro International Natural Park, the Douro Demarcated Region begins. It was established for Port Wine, and has become increasingly famous due to the international popularity of DOC Douro wines.

The **Douro** Region

Established in 1756, Alto Douro Vinhateiro was the first designation of origin in the world. In our region, the vines grow on terraces built along contour lines, supported by large schist walls framed by the Douro International Natural Park and the Côa Valley Archaeological Park. All this made the extraordinary landscape of the Douro Region become the first wine region in the world to be classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
